Make every category do navigational work
A category should group alternatives that a buyer can meaningfully compare for one task. Test the label against representative members and adjacent nonmembers. If a product belongs only because its marketing page repeats a popular phrase, the axis is too loose. Search1001's category, capability, engine and integration routes represent different relationships; collapsing them into one keyword bucket would make the map harder to use.
- Collect candidate labels from buyer tasks and verified product capabilities.
- Merge synonyms while preserving the language buyers actually use.
- Check that a category route can explain inclusion and exclusion with evidence.
Version labels without losing identity
Synonyms may belong to one concept, while overlapping capabilities may require separate axes. Record the canonical label, aliases, inclusion rule and examples. When a category is renamed or split, preserve entity IDs and the previous relationship evidence. A taxonomy change can alter landing-page intent and internal links; it deserves a content review, not just a database label edit.
To carry this decision forward, connect categories to entities; separate participant roles.
Category test using provider role and buyer task
| Decision field | Record or rule |
|---|---|
| Buyer task | what decision does this category help make? |
| Membership | what observable feature qualifies a participant? |
| Difference | why is this not a duplicate of the parent or sibling route? |

A category test with real records
Choose three representative products and one adjacent nonmember. Ask whether the category name predicts a shared buyer task and whether a source supports each relationship. If the label merely repeats a marketing term, rename or split it. If two labels are synonyms, merge them while keeping aliases for navigation. Search1001's distinct capability and integration paths show why one product can have several legitimate relations. The taxonomy should make those relations understandable to a buyer, not simply provide more pages for search engines.
A taxonomy needs buyer meaning
Do not create an indexable category page merely because a taxonomy field exists. Publish only when the route has a distinct task and enough verified substance.
